As a native Houstonian, one of my favorite destinations in Houston is the Museum of Fine Arts Houston (MFAH). It also happens to be one of the best deals in town and the MFAH membership is good value an

d worth it. It is more than a museum with exhibits, it has restaurants, film showings and a cool gift shop. Check their website for current hours as well as the free day each week which is currently on Thursday.

Here are the reasons I believe a MFAH membership is a good value and worth it.

The cost relative to the entertainment value.

It is a bargain with an annual membership, with prices as of the writing of this blog post, of $70 for individuals, a dual membership of $95 or a family membership of $115.  Divide that amount by half a dozen trips, or even less, over the course of a year – it’s a bargain. An annual membership includes tickets to all the special exhibits.  All-inclusive.

Maybe the biggest benefits, with unlimited access for one price, you can go more often.

With a membership, you do not feel obligated to spend a lot of time there on each visit.  We often go to see one specific exhibit and we are out in an hour.

Proximity to the rest of the museum district, Hermann Park and the Houston Zoo.

From the roof, you get amazing views of downtown and the Rice University campus – you can really appreciate how green the campus is from up there. The interior of the building alone with the interior staircase is amazing.

The museum is quiet and peaceful.

Not easy to find a space with those qualities.

The MFAH gift shop.

Every visit to the museum includes a visit to the gift shop to buy or just to look.

Current and special exhibits.

In addition to the collection, they have special exhibits that are on a tour from other art museum collections around the world. A membership includes these special exhibits.

Film Theatre.

They have a film theatre that shows unique films not found elsewhere.

The Cullen Sculpture Garden

Take a book with you.  Have coffee or lunch. It’s really nice.

Overall, there are many reasons why the MFAH membership is a good value and worth it.
