I often meet people from out of town, here for the weekend, and they are typically staying downtown. They want to know what they should do for the weekend and I generally give them suggestions which are either downtown or close by like the Museum District.
If they are only here for the weekend, I don’t want them spending their time in traffic driving from here to there. My suggestions are typically in walking distance (downtown), within a short ride share or accessible by public transportation.
This conversation came about a few times with visiting fans recently during the weekend of the College Football playoffs and the first round home game playoff for the Texans.
I have put these into two different posts – one for favorable weather and one for less than favorable weather because this impacts the suggestions considerably.
On to the less than favorable weather recommendations.
Downtown
Downtown Houston Post (formerly a post office) (https://www.posthtx.com) Food hall with great view of Houston skyline from the roof.

Museum District and Rice University Area – South of downtown about 5 miles – accessible by the red line light rail
Museum of Fine Arts Houston (MFAH) (https://www.mfah.org/). Visit the top of the Glassel School of Art (https://www.mfah.org/visit/glassell-school) for excellent views of downtown, Hermann Park and Rice University.
Houston Museum of Natural Science (https://www.hmns.org/)
Rice Village – cafes, pubs, restaurants, shopping (https://rice-village.com)
Armadillo Palace – a restaurant that is uniquely Houston.
The Menil Museum (https://www.menil.org/)
Rothko Chapel (https://www.rothkochapel.org/)
Downtown Movie Theatre (https://www.amctheatres.com/movie-theatres/houston/amc-houston-8)
This is a good list to start with. I’ll add to it as I go.
