Recently, while out having brunch at one of my go to downtown restaurants, I met someone who had just moved to downtown Houston from out of state. We had a fun conversation which eventually evolved into me rambling on about some of my favorite places and things to do downtown and some excursions.
I had a similar conversation with others new to downtown all of which have inspired to write a series on things to do and places to go when you first arrive. Often in the conversations, this list makes it way onto a cocktail napkin.
So you just moved downtown and so how do you get started?
Today we are starting with Market Square Park.
Besides being a nice place to visit for no particular reason, there are an abundance of events including movie night, bingo night, free concerts (the Road to the River Revival in particular is one of my favorites) and numerous other festive events.
The giant mistletoe at Christmas is an annual tradition of taking a selfie under the mistletoe.
The best way to keep track of the events is marketsquarepark.com under “Events”.
They maintain a current list of events so that is easy to track.
Just bring your blanket or lawn chair and your picnic accoutrements. Nikko Nikko’s is also there as a food option.
One particular mention for bingo night is that sometimes a line will form to buy bingo cards ($10 each) so allow some time for that.
If you have not been, give it a try and enjoy.
