There’s a lot of angst about the weather right now, but let’s put things into perspective.
Complaining about the weather is a favorite past time in Houston, but in all fairness, that goes for most cities.
Let me provide some perspective on Houston weather from someone who has lived here a long time.
I basically break the weather in Houston into two parts.
Part 1 starts in June and runs through September, sometimes mid-October. Yes, it’s a long hot summer and by late September, early October, I am desperate for that first hint of fall. Generally, I am hoping for temperatures in the low 90’s best case. If we can avoid triple digits, I claim victory for “Part 1”. Regardless, lots of time at the pool.
Here’s the good news, Part 2. So usually around mid-October, the cooler temperatures kick in. When I say cooler temperatures, I mean saying goodbye to the 90’s. The winter temperatures can be all over the place and can involve shorts and t-shirts, as in this case, or maybe a jacket and sweater. No one is shoveling snow off the sidewalk.
Part 2 takes you through the holiday season, the new year and ultimately to my favorite time of the year, spring. March thru May are the premium months in Houston. Great temperatures and lots of sunny days.
If we do the math, Part 1 is approximately 4 months while Part 2 is 8 months, close to 70% of the calendar year.
I am good with those numbers.
One other thing to consider, if the weather in Houston was like it is in March all the time, homes would be 2 or 3 times the price and twice as many people would live here. Imagine the traffic then. Be thankful for Part 1.
