As I have been blogging under the “Travel” tab, I recently completed a 55 day, 12,000 mile train journey around this country. The following is an excerpt from that blog which I believe to be relevant to the original mission of this website.
Reflections on My Hometown
Visiting the large metropolitan cities, some for the second time, I was enamored by the high level of energy, the architecture, the history, the arts. It was early in spring, so the floral contributed to the ambiance. Taking in the sensory overload, I wondered how I would feel when I returned home, to my hometown.
My hometown has all of the things I noted above, but maybe not on the scale as some of these other cities like NYC or Chicago. Very few, if any cities, can match the history one finds in Boston or Philadelphia. I knew this question would be front and center upon my return home.
So on the morning following my return home, from that last leg from New Orleans to Houston, I found myself walking the streets of downtown – which starts with the first step out of the front door of the building I live in. So it happens every day.
I immediately felt home again. Thankful that the streets were not quite as crowded as those other cities, the number of cars was considerable less as was the overall noise level with a thriving economy. And I ran into people I knew. Maybe the best part.
As it is often said, visiting a city is a lot different from living there. So in short, it was great to be back home, in Houston.
And back in Texas.
